This year's W.A.C.E. Academy Plus two-part session provided timely and practical insights for chamber leaders. The sessions covered a deep dive into Federal Issues impacting businesses and communities, and tips on Mastering Modern Media.

Part 1: Federal Issues Affecting Businesses

The first session was an in-depth look at federal issues impacting businesses, led by the U.S. Chamber. Chamber leaders from across the country joined the conversation to discuss challenges facing their local economies.

Key highlights from this discussion included:
  • Tax Policy & Small Business: Participants explored the economic impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the importance of preserving the 20% pass-through deduction for small businesses.
  • Tariffs & Trade: Concerns were raised about projected 2025 tariff expansions and their potential cost burden on U.S. manufacturers and consumers.
  • Healthcare: Many chambers expressed worry about local healthcare facility closures, especially in light of potential Medicaid cuts.
  • Immigration Reform: A robust conversation covered workforce needs, visa processing delays, and the importance of expanding caps to meet labor demands.
  • Permitting & Infrastructure: There was strong alignment on the need to modernize and expedite the permitting process to enable economic growth, especially in the energy and transportation sectors.
"These conversations reinforced the critical role chambers play in shaping policy at all levels," said Nancy Hoffman Vanyek, President & CEO of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. "It was a really insightful session and I was proud to be in the room with such dedicated leaders from our industry."

Part 2: Mastering Modern Media with Matt Klink

The second session, led by Matt Klink of Klink Campaigns, was a great refresher for seasoned professionals and offered strong fundamentals for newcomers. Participants learned how to prepare for interviews, respond effectively, and understand the difference between on-the-record, off-the-record, and for-attribution information.

A key takeaway from the session was the importance of being purposeful with your communication. "You don’t have to respond immediately—take time to gather your thoughts and speak with purpose," Vanyek recalled as a key reminder. This advice is particularly valuable in today's fast-paced media environment.

The session also included peer-to-peer discussions, allowing attendees to share their own communication challenges and receive actionable insights from Klink. The discussion highlighted the evolving media landscape, which now includes not only traditional reporters but also bloggers and online personalities.

Some of the favorite reminders from this session included:
  • Reputation is everything—and fragile.
  • Not every battle is your battle.
  • Flag what's important so your audience remembers.
  • Media is a tool—use it strategically.

Both Academy Plus sessions provided a valuable blend of expertise and practical application, leaving attendees with actionable strategies for the future.
