For local Chambers, diversifying revenue streams is always top of mind. As we continuously look beyond traditional membership dues to fund impactful community programs, government and foundation grants have increasingly entered the conversation. To find out where Western chambers stand on this front, W.A.C.E. recent Chamber Snapshot Survey focused on Grant Readiness. The data provides a clear picture of how chambers are leveraging grants and where we have room to grow. Grant Revenue: A Common but Small Slice of the Pie
The survey revealed that while the majority of chambers are pulling in some grant funding, it typically represents a minor portion of their overall operating budget. When asked, "What percentage of your total income comes from government or foundation grants?", the breakdown showed that 69% of responding chambers receive at least some grant funding, though most keep it under the 10% mark:
The Readiness Gap: We Lack Formal Systems Securing a grant is only half the battle—finding them and being prepared to apply is where the real work begins. The survey highlighted a significant operational gap in how chambers track these opportunities. When asked, "Does your Chamber have a 'Grant Readiness Checklist' or a formal process for tracking grant opportunities?":
This indicates that while many chambers are actively receiving grant funding (as shown in the revenue data), the vast majority are likely pursuing these opportunities on an ad-hoc basis rather than using a structured, proactive system. Serving the Broader Community: Fiscal Sponsorship Sometimes, chambers don't just apply for grants for themselves; they help facilitate funding for others. We asked, "Do you act as a 'Fiscal Sponsor' for other community non-profits?"
For the one-fifth of chambers acting as fiscal sponsors, this role serves as a vital bridge—allowing smaller, non-exempt, or emerging community initiatives to access grant funding under the chamber's established legal and financial umbrella. The Key Takeaway The data shows a clear opportunity for our industry. While most chambers are already successfully securing grant funding, less than one in five have a formal tracking process or checklist in place. By formalizing our grant-seeking behaviors and building "grant-ready" organizational habits, we can turn what is often a reactive scramble into a predictable, strategic driver of non-dues revenue.
