Chambers of commerce continuously seek innovative ways to strengthen local economies and foster thriving communities. The America Canyon Chamber's "Kids Commerce" program offers a powerful model for chamber professionals looking to create a lasting impact by investing in youth entrepreneurship.

Dual Impact: Economy & Community
Kids Commerce directly addresses two vital chamber competencies: strengthening the local economy  and promoting our community.
By empowering middle and high school students as business owners, America Canyon cultivates its future economic engine. The program teaches essential business skills—from planning and budgeting to marketing—equipping them to launch and sustain ventures. This hands-on experience enriches the local business ecosystem.
Beyond economics, Kids Commerce significantly enhances community pride. It connects experienced local business owners, including Chamber members, with aspiring young entrepreneurs. This intergenerational mentorship builds supportive networks and injects new energy and diverse ideas, fostering a vibrant, supportive environment for all.

The Program's Genesis
The program began after a 2021 Street Fair where youth wanted to operate businesses but lacked qualifications. Inspired by W.A.C.E.'s "Junior CEO" program, the Chamber adapted the format. With Chamber member assistance, they developed a path for youth to turn ideas into legitimate businesses, complete with training and permit acquisition.
Living the Brand PurposeKids Commerce embodies the America Canyon Chamber's Brand Purpose:
  • Catalyst for Business Growth: It teaches youth that no dream is too big, providing tools and inspiration.
  • Convener of Leaders and Influencers: It brings together local business leaders as mentors, fostering a powerful network.
  • Champion for a Thriving Community: Chamber members' enthusiastic support showcases their commitment to a supportive business environment.
The program has graduated 51 kids, launching 48 new businesses, from dog biscuits to food vendors.

A Non-Revenue Investment
Kids Commerce is not a revenue-generating program for the Chamber; its value is purely in community impact. Costs per student (approx. $600-$1600 for permits, licenses, etc.) are supported by the Chamber's general fund. Local businesses provide free resources, and the City waives business license fees. This collaborative funding highlights a deep community commitment. A new Youth/Workforce Foundation was launched in 2024 to secure additional grant funding and expand the program.

Inspiring the Next Generation
The America Canyon Chamber's Kids Commerce program is a launchpad for dreams. It teaches young students how to run a business professionally and legally, instilling confidence and practical skills for life. This powerful example shows how chambers can proactively cultivate entrepreneurial spirit, ensuring a vibrant future for their communities. It's an investment that yields dividends for years to come, proving that impactful initiatives often prioritize people over profit.
